Letter guide
Rundfunkbeitrag: the letter from the Beitragsservice explained
The Rundfunkbeitrag is a fee that funds public TV and radio in Germany. It is charged per home (Wohnung) — not per person and not per device, even if you don’t own a TV.
Deadline
Reply or pay by the date in the letter. If reminders are ignored, the amount can be collected by enforcement (Vollstreckung) with extra costs.
Who sends it
ARD ZDF Deutschlandradio Beitragsservice, Cologne.
What to look for
- Your contribution number (Beitragsnummer) — use it whenever you contact them.
- Whether the letter asks you to register, confirms payment or is a reminder.
- The amount and the period it covers.
- The date by which you should reply or pay.
What you usually need to do
- Just moved in? Register the home — or tell them that someone in your home already pays (one payment per home is enough).
- Pay by direct debit or bank transfer with your contribution number.
- If you receive certain benefits (e.g. Bürgergeld, BAföG, social assistance), you can apply for an exemption (Befreiung) or reduction — with proof.
- When you move, deregister or update your details.
