Bescheid from the Jobcenter (Bürgergeld): how to read it
The Jobcenter sends a Bescheid (decision) when it grants, changes, refuses or reclaims Bürgergeld. Common types: Bewilligungsbescheid (granted), Änderungsbescheid (changed) and Aufhebungs- und Erstattungsbescheid (cancelled, money reclaimed).
Deadline
An objection must reach the Jobcenter within one month after the decision is considered delivered. Invitations to appointments (Einladung) are different: if you can’t come, tell the Jobcenter before the date — otherwise payments can be reduced.
Who sends it
Your local Jobcenter.
What to look for
- The type of decision (title at the top).
- The period (Bewilligungszeitraum) and the monthly amount.
- How it is calculated: needs (Bedarf), housing costs, income counted.
- Whether you must pay money back, and by when.
- The notice on how to object (Rechtsbehelfsbelehrung).
What you usually need to do
- Check that household members, rent and income are correct.
- Note when the period ends — you usually have to apply again before (Weiterbewilligungsantrag).
- If you disagree, you can file an objection (Widerspruch) in writing or at the Jobcenter.
- Keep every letter and keep copies of everything you send.
Where to get help
Advice centres for unemployed people (Erwerbslosenberatung), welfare associations such as Caritas or Diakonie, and lawyers for social law can help — often for free.
